Social ResponsibilityAmeyCespa understands that our businesses affects the local community and has wider impacts across the region and even globally. The company takes corporate social responsibility (CSR) very seriously and does all it can to reduce its impacts locally and globally and where ever possible likes to work together with the local community to provide benefit. Sustainable initiatives are fundamental to our business, which is primarily about recycling and composting household and business waste; we are accredited to environmental management system ISO 14001. We make every effort we can to divert waste from landfill and look on it as a potential resource, rather than a problem than needs to be got rid of, for very sound environmental reasons which have been well rehearsed for many years and are widely accepted by all groups in society, but also for financial reasons, because recycling keeps waste management costs to our customers to a minimum, in particular to local councils, our main customers. To help ensure that we are able to recycle as much as possible we have built a state of the art Mechanical Biological Treatment plant, that sorts recyclable materials from mixed residual waste, that used to go straight to landfill and composts the remaining organic fraction. We ensured that sustainability was integral to its design, construction and future operation to minimiseenergy use and natural resources whilst reducing waste. It features: · On-demand energy saving lighting to plant and visitor centre · Solar panels on the roof for hot water for offices · Rockwool insulation used throughout plant · Design facilitates quick turnaround of council vehicles to reduce engine idling time · Many kilometres of under floor drainage in the composting hall made from recycled plastics. · Low emissivity glass · On-site foul drainage water is treated below ground (chemical free) prior to discharge into the SuDS system · Rainwater harvesting system to be used in the MBT process and toilet system · All process water is recycled · Recyclable ceiling tiles · Recycled & reused furniture in education centre · Recycled plastic used in floor channels · Recycled yarn used in carpets · Carbon Neutral cladding (Corus offset scheme) over the exterior of the building We are also planting 3,370 trees and hedging plants around MBT, to help offset carbon emissions through its power use. We opened a new In-Vessel Composting plant in October 2009 to ensure we meet all the current regulations regarding composting mixed food and garden waste; we recycle over 60% of the skip waste we collect in our construction and demolition area, and generate electricity from landfill gas, all on our Waterbeach site. Our whole Waterbeach waste management park is managed with environmental protection being paramount (click here for more information); we have two County Wildlife Sites within the waste management park, and our whole site was winner of the Award for Climate Change at the Royal Town Planning Institute Awards in 2007. We also have an inspiring education centre that all local schools, as well as community groups and professional organisations can visit free of charge to learn more about what happens to their waste. Outside our site we also try to reduce our impact on the environment. All our lorry drivers receive SAFED (safe and fuel efficient driving) training to reduce their fuel use and thus vehicle emissions as much as possible and we have entered into an agreement with Cambridgeshire County Council for our lorries to avoid driving through local villages (except for deliveries to the villages), including Sutton, Haddenham and Wilburton, to reduce our impact on these villages. We use local suppliers and service providers where ever possible to reduce carbon emissions from deliveries and ensure that our suppliers and sub-contractors comply with the requirements of our integrated management system, PAS 99, which covers areas such as quality, environmental and health and safety management. We also like to work closely with the local community in a number of ways. Firstly we have the AmeyCespa Community Fund which allows us to set aside a proportion of our landfill tax liability to provide funding for organisations that deliver a range of community and environmental objectives. We currently set aside around £150,000 per quarter for this fund. Secondly we provide some sponsorship or other in-kind support to local events and charitable organisations; for example we have provided free recycling and rubbish bins for a number of local village fetes, sports and charity events and we have provided skips of compost free of charge to local schools, allotments and tree/flower plant events. Finally, we have a site liaison group, which involves local residents, members of the three parish councils that surround our Waterbeach site and District and County Council representatives, and meets twice a year to discuss any developments to the Waterbeach site, any complaints that there may be from local residents and any ways AmeyCespa can improve its operations for the benefit of the local community. |
