    AmeyCespa and the Environment

butterflyWe operate under strict environmental policies and are constantly seeking new ways in which to improve the environment for ourselves and the local community.

A number of site reclamation schemes have been carried out which have brought despoiled land back to agricultural or amenity use. Our 400 acre site is a haven for wildlife, particularly birds. The rough grazing on the restored landfill is home to a variety of plants and animals including bee orchids, barn owls, tawny owls, skylarks and the brown hare.

Two County Wildlife Site ditches run through the site, attracting kingfishers and dragonflies, while the extensive wetland areas support numerous wintering birds including; waders such as lapwing, redshank and oystercatchers. A stork has also made the site its home. We have an extensive programme of tree and hedgerow planting and a wetland habitat creation and monitoring scheme to continue to improve the value of the site for the future.

    Sustainability

AmeyCespa Can RecyclingSustainable initiatives have been core within the MBT from design and construction through to operation. They include the use of energy efficient light and power systems, sustainable drainage systems, rainwater harvesting, grey water usage and the use of solar panels on the roof to provide hot water for the offices and the Education Centre.

Carbon neutral cladding has been fitted over the whole exterior of the building, Rockwool insulation has been used throughout, and the many kilometres of under floor drainage in the composting halls is made from recycled plastics.

In addition, the plant is designed to ensure quick turn around of council vehicles when they drop off waste, to reduce engine idling time. A number of native trees and hedging plants have also been planted around the MBT to offset carbon emissions. The Waterbeach Waste Management Park was winner of the Award for Climate Change at the Royal Town Planning Institute Awards in 2007.

The Education Centre has been finished with items made from recycled materials to minimise the use of virgin materials, and to act as a showcase for other organisations.
